Up to how many weeks can the Abortion Pill (Medical Abortion, RU486) be performed?
In the US, the FDA has approved the Abortion Pill (medication abortion) procedure for termination of pregnancy up to 10 weeks from a woman’s last period (menses).
The pregnancy abortion pills are used to terminate pregnancies in the first trimester (3 to 14 weeks), second trimester (14.1 to 28 weeks), third trimester(28.1 weeks or further) and late term (23.1 weeks or further).
Most Physicians in the U.S. do not perform the Abortion Pill Procedure after 10 weeks from the last menstrual period.
European medical literature indicates the Abortion Pill procedure is able to be performed safely up to 11, 12, 13 and 14 weeks on a outpatient basis.
There is a higher incidence of heavier vaginal bleeding and retained pregnancy tissue (failure) beyond the 10th week of pregnancy using the medication abortion procedure.
Our Women’s Center’s combine Out Patient and In Clinic Abortion Pill methods to terminate pregnancies from 3 to 24 weeks..
What Is The Abortion Pill?
The Abortion Pill (Medical Abortion, Non-Surgical Abortion) consists of one of three Methods for Termination of Pregnancies in the first trimester.
- Mifepristone and Misoprostol
- Methotrexate and Misoprostol
- Misoprostol alone
Mifepristone (Mifeprex, Mifegyne, RU 486, Early Options, French Pill)
Mifeprisone was approved by the FDA in Sept. 2000 for early abortions (7 weeks).
Mifepristone works by blocking the hormone Progesterone that is responsible for the maintenance and growth of the pregnancy.
The absence of Progesterone in a monthly cycle causes the lining of the Uterus (endometrium) to break down and leads to cramping and vaginal bleeding.
Mifepristone binds to the Progesterone receptors on the uterine wall. The absence of Progesterone causes the pregnancy tissue surrounding the inside wall of the Uterus to stop supplying nutrition and oxygen to the fetus. This leads to separation (detachment) of the fetus from the wall of the Uterus.
Using Mifepristone alone has a 40 to 60% chance of terminating pregnancies up to 8 weeks over a two week period of time.
Misoprostol (Cytotec):
Misoprostol is a Prostaglandin E1. It was approved in the mid-80’s for the indication to prevent and treat gastric ulcers in patients who chronically use Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Medications (NSAIDs).
Misoprostol works by binding to the Prostaglandin receptors to cause uterine contractions and opening, thinning and softening of the Cervix (opening to the Uterus). This initiates cramping, vaginal bleeding and the fetus being expelled.
Misoprostol alone has a success rate of 85 to 98% for terminating pregnancies up to 14 weeks.
Methotrexate Medication: (tablets; injection):
Methotrexate has been used since the mid-50’s for treatment of cancers of the head and neck, breast, colon, etc. It is used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis, ectopic pregnancy Hydatidiform moles and Choriocarcinoma.
Since the late 80’s, Methotrexate has been used to terminate pregnancies alone up to 6 to 7 weeks or combine with Misoprostol up to 9 weeks.
The Methotrexate Medication works by stopping the growth of special placental cells called Cytotrophoblasts. They are responsible for the growth and spread of the Placenta.
If the Placenta is unable to spread, the pregnancy tissue will outgrow its nutrition and oxygen supply. Additionally; the Cytotrophoblasts are no longer able to duplicate or replicate and the pregnancy tissue dies.
Methotrexate alone has nearly 100% success rate of terminating pregnancies that are 6 weeks or less.
Combining two Abortion Medications In First Trimester Associated With Higher Success Rates For Termination Of Pregnancies:
Success Rates For Termination Of Pregnancy Up To 10 Weeks From Last Menses according to World Literature:
Mifepristone and Misoprostol – 94 to 98%
Methotrexate and Misoprostol -88 to 96%
Misoprostol Alone – -85 to 95%

Is The Abortion Pill Safe?
Over 3 million women have undergone the Abortion Pill procedure in the US alone since Sept 2000. The process has been found to be highly safe and effective.
The maternal death rate is 11 to 14 times greater for a normal term delivery compared to a medical abortion.
The chance of maternal death while undergoing a medical abortion procedure is 0.00067%.
The abortion pill does not make women infertile or have pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, low birth weight infants, premature ruptured membranes or preterm births.
There is no higher chance of breast cancer or psychological illness (anxiety, severe depression, ect)
Abortion Pill Pain Level:
A visual pain scale that included over 2000 women from 0 to 10 rated the pain a 6 at its peak.
The majority of women do not use any medications for discomfort. Approximately 40% use over-the-counter medications that include Tylenol, Advil or Naproxen. This leaves 5 to 8% of women that require narcotic medications for pain relief.
How Do You Know If Abortion Pill Worked?
Over 90% of women seemingly know when the abortion pill process is complete by the following:
- Nausea and Vomiting relieved
- Bloating and abdominal discomfort disappear
- Breast tenderness and Nipple Sensitivity dissipates
- Normal appetite returns
- Frequent Urination and urgency go away
- Vaginal bleeding resolves generally in 5 to 14 days.
One does not know if abortion process is 100% complete until the follow up 3 to 4 week appointment for 1) pregnancy test negative, 2) pelvic exam performed or 3) Repeat Ultrasound (Sonogram) showing no evidence of retained tissue.
If there is retained tissue noted on sonogram, it does not follow that repeat Misoprostol tablets are given or surgical suction curettage is required. Expectant management is used in many circumstances.

There are several facilities that charge additionally for certain steps of the abortion procedure. We do our best to be transparent and not have any additional or hidden fees.
For women who have Rh negative blood type, a Rh injection is required. It is not included in our regular fee.
The Rh injection prevents women from producing antibodies that may possibly be detrimental to her pregnancies in the future.
Only 15% of women are Rh negative. The majority of women who are Rh negative already know they are before coming to our Clinics Abortions Offices.
For patients who are between 3 to 12 weeks, the cost of the injection is $75. Women 12.1 weeks or further require a higher dosage amount. The price is $125.
Why Is The Wait Time In The Offices 4 to 6 hours?
The surgical procedure itself normally takes 5 to 10 mins. It is each step described above and the waiting between each step that takes the longest.
