- The copper is toxic to the egg that is released and destroys it
- Copper inhibits sperm/egg fertilization
- The local environment of the cervix (opening to the) changes so that the sperm are unable to enter the uterine cavity
- There is a local inflammatory reaction of the lining of the uterine wall which prevents implantation of the blastocyst from occurring
Contraindications of the use of the IUD as a use for Emergency Contraception are ectopic pregnancy, undiagnosed uterine bleeding, pregnancy, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Cervicitis, Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI’s).
