The 3-Step Process Of The Abortion Pill At Our Orlando Clinic
The Orlando Women’s Center offers more affordable, convenient, and effective abortion services to benefit the women of Orlando, Fl. and the surrounding areas. The clinic offers services committed to the delivery of quality, approved, and safe abortion services.
The abortion pill is another way for terminating a pregnancy that is generally up to 70 to 84 (10 to 12 weeks) days or less. The method doesn’t entail sedation or a surgical procedure. It allows women to complete the process in the privacy and comfort of their homes in Orlando.
Step 1
After a history and physical that may include a pelvic examination and perform a pregnancy sonogram for weeks gestation, a Doctor will determine if Mifepristone is safe to administer.
There are medical facilities that use the hormone progesterone to “reverse the effects” of Mifepristone. Several randomized studies have found this process to lead to significant vaginal bleeding and increase in hospitalizations.
Two studies were stopped due to the higher risk over the benefit of the use of progesterone to reverse the effects of Mifepristone on the pregnant uterus.
Step 2:
The second pill, Misoprostol (4 pills), is normally taken within 24 to 48 hours after taking Mifepristone. It has proven to work when taking it simultaneously and up to 5 days of taking Mifepristone though in some studies was found to be slightly less effective.
Step 3:
The third step is to follow-up in the office to determine if the abortion pill procedure terminated the pregnancy no complications are being experienced.
In many parts of the world, the combined usage of Mifepristone and Misoprostol does not require mandatory follow-up if the woman does not experience any problems and a take home pregnancy test is negative 3 to 4 weeks after taking the medications.
The abortion pill has a success ranging from 94 to over 99% effective. In rare cases, the medical abortion process fails and a Surgical Dilation and Curettage (D&C) will be necessary to remove the remaining pregnancy tissue.
DOES THE ABORTION PILL PROCEDURE HURT?
The experience is different for each individual the amount of pain and discomfort that may occur.
Over 50% of women undergo the procedure without the use of taking any medications for discomfort. Approximately 40 to 45% of women take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications (Ibuprofen, Advil, Naproxen) for their mild to moderate discomfort. That leaves only 5% to 8% of patients that require narcotic medications for severe pain.
Some women report a slight discomfort while others compare it to heavy and severe menstrual cramps or even labor pains.
Studies show that how many women perceive pain who undergo the abortion pill process may include several factors:
· The woman’s general health and well–being(if you any underlying condition)
· How many weeks into the pregnancy. Women who have early pregnancies (3 to 4 weeks) experience minimal to no discomfort.
. Never have had children
· Your own pain tolerance levels
· Your stress level/emotions/support system
TIPS TO MAKE THE ABORTION PROCESS COMFORTABLE:
· Plan to have the procedure on a day you are not working or can stay home.
· Try and put on loose clothing for a couple of days after the process.
· Utilize firm pillows to position yourself in a comfortable position.
· Have someone massage your lower abdomen and back
· Use a hot water bottle or heating pad on the lower abdomen and pelvic area to alleviate cramping and discomfort
· Take a prolonged warm or hot shower.
HOW LONG WILL THE ABORTION PILL PROCESS TAKE?
As mentioned earlier, the first appointment is mandatory. Some women may require two or more visits. Approximately 98 to 99% of women who have the procedure performed at our Women’s Center office in Orlando, Florida, normally complete the process within the first one to seven days.
Vaginal bleeding and lower abdominal cramping normally begins within 2 to 4 hours after taking the Misoprostol tablets.
The heaviest vaginal bleeding and pain occurs just prior to passage of the pregnancy tissue through the opening of the cervix. This happens on average between 3 to 6 hours after taking Misoprostol.
Spotting and bleeding may continue normally from 5 days to 2 weeks. 8% of patients may have vaginal bleeding for 30 days and 1% may do so for 60 days.
Similarly, there is a 1 to 2 percent chance of delayed onset of vaginal bleeding. This can be due to an ectopic pregnancy or a failed abortion. This doesn’t necessarily mean that a surgical abortion will be required.
A second dose of Misoprostol may help to empty the pregnancy tissue completely from within the intrauterine cavity.
CAN THE ABORTION PILL FAIL?
There is less than a 1 to 3% chance of the abortion pill process failing. In such cases, it is strongly recommended that a surgical suction uterine aspiration be performed to complete the process to prevent complications such as severe lower abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding or pelvic infection.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I QUALIFY FOR MEDICAL ABORTION AT THE ORLANDO WOMEN’S CENTER ABORTION CLINIC?
For you to have a medical abortion pill procedure, the pregnancy must not generally be more than 70 to 84 days from the woman’s last menses.
An ultrasound will be conducted in our abortion clinic to ascertain the number of weeks pregnant the patient is.
ADVANTAGES OF THE ABORTION PILL Vs IN-CLINIC ABORTION:
The second medication (Misoprostol) is generally taken in the privacy of one’s home
Your partner or relative can be with you during the process, as it doesn’t require a surgical procedure. Most people appreciate having someone close nearby when the ‘miscarriage’ occurs.
The patient maintains control of when and where she terminates her pregnancy.
COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF MIFEPRISTONE:
· Occasional bleeding or spotting
· Chills
· Fever
· Headache
· Mild gastrointestinal upset
· Nausea
COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF MISOPROSTOL:
· Mild stomach upset
· Mild fevers
· Abdominal Cramping
The cramping usually is associated with vaginal bleeding and may be heavy (bleeding more than 2 pads an hour for 2 hours in a row).
After passage of the pregnancy tissue, mild to light bleeding will occur. Generally, the side effects are tolerable, mild and lasts for a few days.
The Physician will prescribe medications for nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea when required.
DO I NEED TO MISS WORK OR SCHOOL?
One of the main merits of the pill is that you can easily plan when and where you want to start and complete the process. With careful planning, neither school or work should have to be missed.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER PHYSICAL RISKS TO CONSIDER?
All medical procedures have risks. The difference is how big or small the risks are. For medical abortion, the risks include:
· Severe or prolonged bleeding
· Infection
· Failed abortion requiring additional intervention
Medically induced abortions are 10 times safer and have lower morbidity than a normal term vaginal delivery.
The chances of a uncomplicated medical abortion affecting your ability to conceive or affect a future pregnancy is rare.
Ovulation may occur 5 to 7 days after completion of the abortion process. A form of birth control is highly encouraged.
WILL I BE AFFECTED EMOTIONALLY?
Most women who undergo a medical abortion procedure rarely experience anxiety, depression or regret regarding the decision to terminate their pregnancy. In fact, most of them feel relieved and comforted afterwards.
However, women may have mixed feelings for 2 to 3 days after completion of the abortion process.
It is important to have both emotional and physical support throughout this time. If you are not sure about the procedure or you regret your decision, counseling may help. At Orlando Women’s Center, we offer comprehensive counseling services to women both before and after the procedure.
The Women’s Center in Orlando understands that most women not only want privacy, but also an expedited and safe abortion process. That’s why we offer private abortion services with ultimate confidentiality.
For an additional fee, one may choose to be the only patient in the our abortion pill clinic. You will have the attention of all the qualified staff, including a counselor, registered nurse, anesthesiologist, and gynecologist. They will ensure you get all the necessary information and care so that you have a safe and effective abortion.
AFTER ABORTION CARE:
Some women may develop side effects or complications that may require further evaluation after the initial medications are taken.
Our abortion aftercare services are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. While there will be some bleeding and pain, physical recovery normally happens very quickly after a medical abortion. In most cases, women bleed for 3 days to 2 weeks.
The initial bleeding will be a bit heavy, but after passage of the pregnancy tissue, it will dramatically diminish immediately. One may also see some blood clots off and on for a few days.
If one experiences any of the following symptoms below, please contact our facility right away.
