The answer to all of these questions is yes! Welcome to the Women’s Center Same Day Abortion Clinic Services where Medical Abortions (Abortion Pill Procedures) can be performed from 3 to 24 weeks.
If yes was the answer you were looking for, and you have considered the abortion pill (RU486, Mifeprex, and Mifepristone) for termination of pregnancy there are two medications generally used in the United States for performing the abortion pill or medical abortion procedure up to 9 weeks gestation. These methods are used in the second and third trimester of pregnancy if the pregnancy poses a threat to the mother’s life or health or there is a significant fetal abnormality or genetic defect, and for incidences of rape or incest.
The number of weeks, months, how late, how far, how long or the cutoff date allowing for an abortion or termination of pregnancy to be legally performed is vague and imprecise. Abortions after the 20th or 21st weeks of pregnancy are now illegal in over 36 States in the U.S. due to State Legislatures voting to ban them. Controversy about the fetus feeling pain during the abortion procedure; requirements that physicians must be on the staff of a local hospital; buildings where abortions are being performed complying with the same standards as outpatient surgical centers (ventilation, hallway, janitor closet, patient dressing room, eye wash station and parking requirements, etc) are just some of the latest manipulations being used to prevent abortions from occurring across the nation. There are numerous other requirements now being placed into law by State Legislators under the pretext of protecting patient and fetal safety. These tactics are intended only to prevent women from having safe and unencumbered access to services they so desperately need. It is the poor women who suffer the consequences of these laws the most. Laws that only further contribute toward a downward spiral of financial strain for those women who already live below the poverty level. Statistically they will never be able to have a middle class lifestyle or avoid living on welfare and will always remain under government dependence and suppression. Women who are well off and have the ability to travel to other States or out of the country are not burdened by any of the outlandish laws created specifically for the purpose of hindering or preventing abortions from being performed.
Women call our offices and ask us all of the time the following questions…How late is too late to have an abortion? How far along do you do abortions? After how many weeks is it illegal to have an abortion? How late can a woman have an abortion? At what point can you not have an abortion? What is the latest in pregnancy that you can have an abortion? Up to how many months is abortion legal? When is the deadline for abortion? What is your cut off for abortion? Do you perform abortions after the 24th week of pregnancy?
The Women’s Centers perform abortions from 3 to 24 weeks of pregnancy using the surgical and the abortion pill procedure. We are able to start and complete the abortion pill procedures in 24 hours or less in 99% of cases. Abortions after the 24th week of pregnancy can be performed if the pregnancy is a threat to the mother’s life or health, if there is a significant fetal abnormality, genetic defect, rape or incest. We are able to consult and refer patients who are 24 weeks or further to a Washington, D.C. affiliate.
The two medications used are RU486 and Misoprostol. RU486 is an anti-progestin that causes sloughing and necrosis of the blood vessels in the uterus leading to increased pressure and uterine contractions. Misoprostol is a prostaglandin that prevents ulcers from occurring in the stomach when patients take non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. There is a 90 to 98% success rate with using the combination of RU486 and Misoprostol tablets. The success rate depends on many factors. One of the factors is the one size fits all steps that most physicians and clinics use for performing the abortion pill or medical abortion method. Just as there are different ways to perform surgical procedures, there are different ways and methods to perform the medical abortion or abortion pill procedure.
Taking Misoprostol tablets alone can terminate pregnancies from 3 to 24 weeks nearly 100% of the time if the proper instructions and steps are followed. Additionally, the complications associated with the use of the medical abortion procedure which not only include failed abortion but incomplete abortion, heavy vaginal bleeding with a small percentage of patients requiring blood transfusions. These complications are rarely if ever seen at the Women’s Centers Same Day Abortion Clinic Services for patients who are 3 to 24 weeks pregnant. Most patients between 3 to 12 weeks gestation complete their procedure within 4 to 6 hours. Patients up to 24 weeks generally complete their procedures in less than 12 hours, although it can be as much as 24 hours before their procedure is complete. Patients from 3 to 24 weeks have completed the procedure in 30 minutes; however, this is unusual. There is no surgery, no sedation and no need for patients to bring someone with them to the office if they choose not to do so. There is no need for a one or two week follow-up sonogram required because with the One Day Abortion procedure, a sonogram is performed prior to discharge from the office. Patients who do not wish to stay or can’t stay after taking the medication, are allowed to return to the office the following day if they are less than 12 weeks gestation.
With the steps used to carry out the abortion pill process at our Same Day Abortion Clinic facilities, there is minimal pain and discomfort. Thus the reason pain medications are rarely if ever required.
The medication is easy to take and the instructions are easy to follow but must be done precisely as stated for the abortion process to be 100% effective. Reasons why most patients choose to initiate the abortion pill or medical abortion process at our abortion clinic facilities: 1) they do not want to risk an incomplete procedure; 2) they do not have anyone at home to assist or help them; 3) they want the upmost in privacy and do not want anyone to know that they are going through this procedure; 4) they like the idea of the abortion pill procedure but prefer a one day process over the regular abortion pill procedure which consists of taking two sets of medications over a 48 hour period and requires returning to the office for a follow-up sonogram in one or two weeks.
Patients who are unable to stay in our offices until the abortion process is complete, may elect to return the following day or within 2 weeks for a sonogram to determine the abortion process was successful.
Women are terrified of having complications from surgery. No matter how many weeks they are, if there is a chance of uterine perforation and there is a safer method, then one would choose the safer method no matter how early or far the woman is in her pregnancy. Although surgical abortion is safe, there are complications that can occur which include perforation of the uterus, cervical tears, bowel and bladder injury, damage to the fallopian tubes and ovaries. With medical abortion procedures, these complications are rare and seldom occur.
Even a physician will not be able to determine an abortion was performed. For some women this privacy and confidentiality is absolutely necessary. A woman early in her pregnancy knows when she is having a miscarriage. There is no need to call her doctor. Should a woman not wish to inform anyone she had an abortion procedure, but may feel it necessary to explain why she is no longer pregnant, she may say she is having or has had a miscarriage.
Side effects commonly associated with the Same Day Abortion Procedure may include the following: Headaches, fever and chills, nausea and vomiting, lower back and abdominal discomfort and vaginal bleeding. These conditions can be resolved or diminished with medication. Should a surgical procedure become necessary (less than 1% of the time) Advanced IV Sedation can be administered. Advanced IV Sedation Medications are in and out of the body within 15 to 20 minutes, allowing women the privacy and the convenience of driving themselves to and from the office without the need for a driver or escort.
The costs of the Surgical and Abortion Pill (medical abortion, non-surgical, chemical) procedures are comparable. The prices generally range from $300.00 to $1,500.00 for the first trimester of pregnancy (3 to 14 weeks) and $500.00 to $35,000.00 for second trimester (14.1 to 24 weeks) and later term abortions with medical indications (24.1 weeks and further).
All abortion procedures may be performed with the Abortion Pill Process within 24 hours or less in 99% of patients with minimal to no complications.
